Lancaster County Emergency Management

Jim Davidsaver, Director

“For the April meeting of the Lincoln Amateur Radio Club, I plan to provide an overview of Emergency Management in Lancaster County. I have a presentation that touches on the history of Emergency Management in the USA; mentions the 5 mission areas of Emergency Management; explains FEMA’s 15 Emergency Sup-port Functions (ESFs); explains the activation and operation of our Emergency Op-erations Center (EOC); tells about our current inventory of equipment and re-sources and our new Salamander credentialing system; and predicts what the future holds for Emergency Management, including social media.”

Tornadoes 2014

A Review of Severe Weather

in the U.S. and Nebraska

by Ken Dewey, WDØBIV

It’s that time of year again for our annual program presented by Dr. Ken Dewey, Applied Climatologist at UNL. Ken will give us an overview of the nation’s extreme weather events of 2014.  He will also review the 2014 tornado season and examine how the season compared to normal for the U.S., for Nebraska, and for our part of the state.

Ken will also preview the annual Central Plains Severe Weather Symposium, Weatherfest and Spring Spotter Training workshop that will all take place in Hardin Hall, East Campus of UNL, on Saturday, April 11.

The Weatherfest, with its many exhibits, will run 9 AM to 2 PM.  The Severe Weather Symposium will start at 11 AM with Bob Henson, of Weather Underground (an excellent Internet source for weather information and severe weather forecasts), talking about “Where Weather and Climate Intersect.” He will be followed by the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency review of the June 2014 Pilger, NE, tornado disaster.

Cathy Zapotocny, Omaha NWS, will review the severe weather events of 2014 in Eastern Nebraska.  Brian Smith, KBØQXF, also with Omaha NWS, will offer the annual Storm Spotter workshop, which will be followed by Reynolds Davis, KØGND, going over the Year 2015 Storm Spotter procedures.

Come early to the Weatherfest! Food trucks will be available in front of the building so you can grab a lunch, and you will also have the opportunity to explore the Doppler on Wheels (DOW) that will be here until about 2 PM that day.  Meanwhile check out all the details at http://www.cpsws.unl.edu.
